Creating effective assessments – Daisy Christodoulou
Description: Assessment can make or break your curriculum. This session will explain the difference between formative and summative assessment and outline four practical and effective assessment techniques that you can use in your classroom: multiple-choice questions, whole-class feedback, comparative judgement and scaled scores. It will also explain why using rubrics and exam mark schemes are not so effective!
Improving Writing – Daisy Christodoulou
Description: Over the last few years, No More Marking have worked with over 2000 schools in the UK, US and Australia, to assess nearly a million pieces of writing using Comparative Judgement. These assessments have provided us with huge insights about what students find easy and hard about writing and allowed us to develop a series of multiple-choice questions that target students’ understanding of sentence structure.
Bullet-Proof Instruction for Writing Success – Dr Nathaniel Swain
Description: As teachers we are always looking for ways to ensure all our students develop into articulate and precise writers. In this session, Dr Swain will explore the common difficulties experienced by students, and how to address them in your teaching. Drawing upon techniques from The Writing Revolution and explicit instruction, you will explore instructional routines and high-impact lessons for developing your students’ writing across the subject areas.
Dr Nathaniel Swain
Teacher, Instructional Coach, Researcher and Writer, Nathaniel has recently joined La Trobe School of Education as Senior Lecturer. Nathaniel is passionate about language, literacy, learning, and effective teaching for all students. Nathaniel has taught a range of learners in primary school settings, and has a blog for teachers known as Dr Swain’s Cognitorium. In 2019, Nathaniel founded a community of teachers and other educators committed to the Science of Learning: THINK FORWARD EDUCATORS, now a registered charity.
Daisy Christodoulou
Daisy Christodoulou is Director of Education at No More Marking, a provider of online comparative judgement. She works closely with schools on developing new approaches to assessment. Before that, she was Head of Assessment at Ark Schools, a network of academy schools. She has taught English in two London comprehensives and has been part of government commissions on the future of teacher training and assessment.
Daisy is the author of Seven Myths about Education, Making Good Progress? The future of Assessment for Learning, and Teachers vs Tech. Her books will be available for sale at the venue.
Daisy is the author of Seven Myths about Education and Making Good Progress? The future of Assessment for Learning, as well as the influential blog daisychristodoulou.com. In March 2020 her third book, Teachers vs Tech, was published by Oxford University Press.
