The new Victorian approach to reading in F-2: What schools can expect next

The Phonics Lesson Plans team in the Victorian Department of Education will present to Think Forward Educators on the new approach to reading  in F-2 in Victorian government schools. This session will provide deeper insight into the announcement on reading along with the systematic synthetic phonics approach. The department’s Phonics Lesson Plans team will discuss the resources they are planning to provide as part of the English Lesson Plans for F-2.

Louise Stewart

Director, Literacy, Languages, Arts and Humanities | Curriculum and Teaching Practice Division

Louise has led a range of education system improvement initiatives in Victoria, NSW and Queensland including the recent announcement of Victoria’s reading position, the Tutor Learning Initiative and NSWs Early Action for Success. Prior to the public service Louise was an Assistant Principal and secondary English teacher working in Queensland and Victoria’s government school systems.

Xanthi Rice

Phonics Lesson Plan Team | Curriculum and Teaching Practice Division

Xanthi Rice has been a teacher for over 20 years. She has worked with the Wimmera South West School Improvement Team as a DSSI Teaching Partner for 3 years working intensively with schools across the area to transform their approach to literacy instruction as well as providing support to all schools through community of practices, learning communities, documentation development, professional learning supports and planning units of work. Xanthi has recently been acting principal at Donald PS and has recently been seconded full time within the Phonics Lesson Plans team.

 

Rachael Buck

Principal Newcomb Primary School/Phonics Lesson Plan Team | Curriculum and Teaching Practice Division

Rachael is an experienced school principal and classroom teacher, with a passion for leading systems and practice improvement. Rachael has a masters degree in Educational Leadership. She has worked extensively within the literacy domain, with a particular focus on structured literacy. Rachael has worked with over 60 schools to align their teaching practice to evidence based reading instruction.  This work has encompassed supporting school leaders to establish and sustain systems of support for classroom teachers and well as coaching classroom teachers to improve lesson design and implementation.  Rachael’s work history also includes working in regional positions within the Department of Education to influence systemic policy.  Rachael is currently seconded part time within the Phonics Lesson Plans team.

Kate Robinson

Principal Mount Pleasant Primary School/Phonics Lesson Plan Team | Curriculum and Teaching Practice Division

Kate is a substantive primary school principal with a passion for low variance systems that support vulnerable cohorts. Kate enjoys working with teachers, and school and system leaders to drive evidence informed practice that supports learner outcomes and system improvements. She has worked in various central, regional, and school roles in varied settings. Kate is currently seconded full time within the Phonics Lesson Plans team.
