Launch Event for Secondary Network
Are you a new, curious, or passionate practitioner of evidence-based practice?
You might have noticed that secondary schools have been a little slower in adopting the Sciences of Learning and Reading. This event offers you a chance to come together with teachers and leaders from all over Australia and beyond, to network, connect, and share your challenges.
You can learn more about cognitive load theory or gain an introduction to the Science of Reading by reading one of the articles below in advance.
You can engage in a discussion of one of the readings in your choice of breakout room, followed by a forum where all your questions about how to gain traction in your secondary context can be answered through the collective wisdom of the group.
The evening will be hosted and moderated by Dr Charlotte Forwood and Rebecca Birch. Make sure you enter your questions when you register.
Dr Charlotte Forwood
Charlotte is a dually registered Primary/Secondary Teacher and Certified Practising Speech Pathologist with experience working in government, independent and special schools (Foundation to Year 12) in Australia and the UK. She has a particular interest in vocabulary development, language and literacy skills, Developmental Language Disorder, metacognition, curriculum design, and design thinking. She enjoys sketchnoting, tinkering with tech and helping students find their voice. Charlotte is currently the Director of Learning Design and Development at Camberwell Girls Grammar School, and a lecturer in the Learning Intervention Department at the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education.
Charlotte is a global ambassador for Raising Awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (RADLD), Co-coordinator of the Boroondara Gifted Network, and a learning designer for The DLD Project.
Rebecca Birch
Rebecca Birch is a teacher of English and the Director of Research and Practice at a top 20 independent school in Sydney, Australia. She worked as a learning support officer in a range of settings while she undertook her teacher training after a successful career in advertising and fashion.
She is a strong proponent of evidence-based practice and has experience with students who bring a wide range of capabilities to the classroom. She is a leader in her field with a passion for sharing her expertise in the area of pedagogy in English.
