Principals’ Forum Term 1 2022

In our first session of 2022 we heard from Principal of Churchill Primary, Jacquie Burrows, on her Science of Learning journey and her recent successes turning her whole school around.

Jacquie Burrows is Principal of Churchill Primary School in Victoria, Australia. Churchill Primary uses an Explicit Direct Instruction approach, teaching the five components of literacy based on the science of reading. Jacquie has overseen significant increases in NAPLAN literacy results using this approach, and expects to see this trend continue.

Steven Capp is the Principal of Bentleigh West Primary School in Melbourne, which has become recognised for its adoption of evidence- based teaching practices, particularly in the area of reading and mathematics. He has worked across the primary and secondary school sectors as an educational leader for the past 15 years. He has a Masters of School Leadership from Melbourne University and has worked with school leaders to explore bridging the gap from research to practice.
