Sarah Kelly - Principal on a journey

We are excited to welcome back Principals and APs/DPs for our next Principals’ Forum with Sarah Kelly.

In this session, Sarah shared:

  • Her current school’s change and the experiences that led to their WHY as a school.

  • The leadership team’s approach to building knowledge and sharing a vision of what we are co-creating with our staff together within our school.

Context: Our school is located in a wealthy area of Regional Victoria, we have had strong NAPLAN data and the school was about to embark on starting 2020 with a two-day course run by F & P to further develop teacher understanding of reading.

Disruption: I am appointed Principal in late 2019, I cancel the F & P Professional Development days as my first act as Principal.

Our belief: We formed the view that our education system is built on our ability as educators to read at university, watch and observe on teaching rounds, mimic what peers have shown us, and create results through discernment of each program and fad thrown our way.

We approached change in our school as a rebuilding of our staff. We created opportunities for knowledge building, we allowed time for discussion, we created opportunities to view the ‘what’ and allowed staff time to discern and question. We are co-creating our journey, at times we may direct but it is a partnership and we create change by working together for low variance.

Sarah Kelly is the principal of St Robert’s Primary School in Newtown, Victoria.
