Catalyst, an evidence-based approach to learning and teaching for classroom, school and system improvement

Transforming lives through learning - this is the purpose of Catalyst, the approach to teaching and learning at Catholic Education Canberra-Goulburn (CECG) that provides professional learning to support teachers to apply evidence-based practice in the classroom.

Catalyst is a significant system-led implementation of the Science of Reading and Science of Learning. Focusing on the teacher as the most important learner, it brings together cognitive science and education, theory and practice, to refine an approach to curriculum, pedagogy and assessment across CECG and improve the outcomes of over 22,000 students.

Now in its fourth year of system wide implementation, Catalyst has evolved over several years from a careful analysis of student outcomes, collective knowledge building of research and a determination to improve teaching practice across our 1000 classrooms.

Catalyst- has two bold goals, that every student becomes a competent reader, and that high impact teaching practice is visible in every classroom.

In this presentation Ross Fox, Director of CECG will share the vision of Catalyst, considerations of the change undertaken and explore the journey and learning at class, school and system level.

Ross Fox

Ross Fox was appointed as Director of Catholic Education, Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn in December 2016. He has held senior positions in Catholic education across Australia, including Director in the Catholic Education Office Melbourne and Executive Director with the National Catholic Education Commission. Ross grew up in country Victoria and studied Engineering at the University of NSW. Later, he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University. Ross is inspired by the great contribution that Catholic schools and educators have made to Australia and shares a passion for seeing every child benefit from quality teaching and learning.
