How we improved results: Our story five years on
We would like to share how our school - St Mary's Primary in Myrtleford - shifted from failing academic results across the school to a school achieving excellent results using the science of reading and learning. We would like to share the mistakes we made and what to avoid and the success of where we are at now, five years later.
Kitty Hancock
Kitty Hancock has taught in the Northeast of Victoria for close to 40 years. The last 16 years has been as principal in two different schools. She has a Masters in Wellbeing and a Masters in Evidence-Based Teaching. Currently Kitty is principal at St Mary’s Primary school in Myrtleford. She has a strong passion for all children becoming literate and numerate. She believes children leaving primary school should have the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in secondary school giving all opportunities for successful and happy careers. Kitty is an advocate for successful teaching and has a strong belief this is possible in all schools.
Ashley Pasqualotto
Ashley Pasqualotto has worked as a primary school teacher for more than 20 years, commencing her career in 2002 with the Los Angeles Unified School District in America. She has a Master of Teaching and is a certified Orton-Gillingham dyslexia practitioner. After teaching Foundation for the last six years at St Mary's Myrtleford, Ashley has begun a new role in 2024 as the Literacy Leader, Learner Diversity Coordinator and Mental Health & Wellbeing Leader. She is a member of the Sharing Best Practice committee and organiser of two successful High Country events, as well as the Foundation lead for the Australian Read2Learn program. Ashley is extremely passionate about evidence-based research in education, with a particular passion for teaching and driving structured literacy in the early years of primary school.
