The Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract Framework with Brad Nguyen

It is commonly accepted that using different representations such as concrete materials and pictures alongside standard written notation can support students in developing conceptual understanding in mathematics. But managing different representations can be unwieldy and research suggests there are pitfalls to avoid when using concrete materials.

This session will spend time looking at the research on the concrete-pictorial-abstract framework and how it can look in a maths lesson.

This is the same presentation Brad gave at the What Works Series event last year.
