Morphology & Why it Matters

Jasmine Shannon, and Kylie Conrad are morphology-obsessed. Seeing morphology as such an unsung hero. they constantly research Greek and Latin and how these languages influence the way we spell today.

Morphology has huge potential to build comprehension, vocabulary and to drive spelling instruction. However, how this is used is still being thought out in many schools. Morphology is the organisational feature of the entire English spelling system which shares a leading role with phonology and is heavily influenced by etymology.

Our Presenters

 

Jasmine Shannon is a Literacy Coach with the Northern Territory Department of Education. She supports up to 153 schools in urban and remote settings improve literacy outcomes. She has a Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies, a Bachelor of Primary Teaching with honours and was inducted into the International Honour Society for academic excellence. She also has post graduate studies in literacy and is part way through a Masters of Speech Pathology.

Jasmine is passionate about raising literacy outcomes for students in the Northern Territory and has worked in many roles including as a primary teacher, an Oral Language Coach, a English Curriculum Coach, an Assistant Principal and even as a Principal of a school on a remote cattle station just to name a few. She has worked in many of the Territory’s remote Indigenous schools across the Top End spending time on Bathurst Island, Groote Eylandt and the Tiwi Islands. She is particularly concerned with improving Indigenous literacy outcomes and continues this work today.

She is also one of three Read Write Inc trainers in Australia and has trained about 80 schools in the NT in this explicit and systematic synthetic phonics approach. Jasmine is also part of the Reading Science in Schools Facebook team which aims to support Australian teachers in reading and learning science. Jasmine first started learning about Morphology from the late William Van Cleave and from there it has almost become an obsession for her!

Kylie Conrad is a Queensland educator. In addition to a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) and a Graduate Diploma in Education (Learning Support & Inclusion), she has trained in MSL and other approaches aligned with the Science of Reading, syntax, written expression, and extensive study related to orthography.

She works in private practice as a literacy specialist with students requiring targeted literacy intervention and range in age from prep to Year 12, having done so for the past 7 years. Kylie’s previous roles include 23 years as a classroom teacher, and a learning support and inclusion specialist in Australia and in London.

Kylie is also a part of the Dyslexia Queensland Support Group team which focuses on advocacy, advice and support for students, their families, and teachers, as well as promoting evidence-based practices.

As a result of feeling compelled to bridge the literacy gap between struggling students and their same aged peers, Kylie has continuously pursued opportunities to deepen her knowledge of the rich tapestry that is our English language and its writing system. These pursuits have fuelled a particular passion for understanding the role of morphology and etymology, alongside phonology as the ‘influencers and organisers’ of orthography. Incorporating this knowledge within a framework that reflects the Science of Reading has greatly enhanced her work with students.
