Calling all current and aspiring Middle Leaders.
We have different names in difference places. You might be a Lead Teacher, Instructional Coach, Learning Specialist, Head of Curriculum or a subject, or an aspiring leader. This forum is designed to give you a space to connect, learn new ideas, practical applications, and receive support from colleagues working in similar spaces to you. We are committed to seeing the Science of Learning reach every classroom you, and your work is crucial to see that through!
Change management and cognitive bias: How to coach people through change
Join us for this Middle Leaders' Forum!
Zach Groshell will be presenting on cognitive bias, with a focus on Gregory Yates’ article ‘How obvious’.
Christie Barrett and Kathleen O'Rouke will be sharing an example of how this change process played out in their contexts.
Optional Follow-Up: Special Small Group Coaching Session
We are offering a special follow-up to this initial presentation by trialing a small group peer coaching. The session will be limited to the first 15 sign ups.
Discuss your change management questions/challenges in a small group setting and receive support from Kathleen and Zach as well as your other TFE peers on how to coach others using these ideas.

About the Convenors
Zach Groshell
Zach Groshell is a secondary instructional coach in the Seattle area, and an experienced primary teacher. Zach holds a PhD in Education and presents often about cognitive science and education research. Zach’s recent contributions include presentations about cognitive load theory for InnerDrive’s Cognitive Science Network, and the chapter on assessment and feedback for the book, Amplifying Instructional Design. Zach hosts the podcast, Progressively Incorrect, and maintains an active professional presence on Twitter (@mrzachg) and his blog, educationrickshaw.com.
Christie Barrett
Christie Barrett is an experienced teacher having taught across Early Years and Primary settings in her native New Zealand, as well as London and Victoria. She is currently Head of Learning and Curriculum at an Independent Junior School in Geelong. The last 3 years have seen Christie lead a journey of change to develop and implement teaching practice in line with the Science of Learning in her school. She regularly develops and presents Professional Learning for teachers, working with a dynamic leadership team who is active in the change journey. They were recipients of the ‘The Emeritus Professor Collette Excellence in Educational Leadership’ Award, and Christie is currently part of the VCAA English curriculum review panel.
Kathleen O’Rourke
Kathleen O’Rourke is a teacher and aspiring middle leader in the NSW Department of Education’s FASTstream program, currently placed at Jindabyne Central School. She was a Winner of the 2022 Commonwealth Bank Schools Plus Teaching Award in the Early Career Category. Kathleen is currently completing the Master of Education in Science of Language and Reading at La Trobe University, which is what motivated her to pursue the Science of Reading, Learning and Maths.
