As part of building a whole- school approach to writing, Marist College has been investigating the use of “The Writing Revolution” (TWR), a systematic approach to writing instruction developed by Judith Hochmann. We have been lucky enough to have some staff members participate in the training from the Writing Revolution organisation, and have begun as a trial with these staff members in early 2021. We will use this training as our model for how to develop the TWR strategies in “Train the Trainer” model.

In Semester 2, our plan is to build a community of practice and introduce these strategies to interested teachers at Marist College, and the wider ACT teaching community. As a community of practice, we want to be able to share and collaborate with as many educators as possible to help build a better understanding of how to use the strategies.

Using the pacing guide provided by TWR, we will select strategies to develop. One of the key facets of the TWR training is the idea of going slow to go fast. What this means is that by focusing on a key number of strategies, you build and accumulate the skills before moving onto the next strategies. The great thing about the pacing guides is that they are similar for all ages, and we will be looking primarily at Year 3 onwards, but the strategies are also transferable to younger ages.

Community of Practice Model

The model for the Community of Practice will be based on the training course from TWR:

  • Discuss the principles of the chosen strategies

  • Provide examples of the strategies in use

  • Offer opportunities for staff to develop materials using the strategies in a collaborative manner

  • Provide opportunities for staff to share how they have used the strategy in their own teaching practice

The first session will be held in Week 3 of Term 3, on Thursday the 29th of July, from 3:30pm-4:30pm at Marist College.

There is no cost, and we would love to see teachers from across the ACT who are also considering instruction as part of their literacy journey. Please feel free to forward to any other educators who you think might be interested.
